Gilson Park WWI Memorial Plaque

A bronze plaque affixed to a boulder marks a memorial grove at Gillson Park that commemorates the supreme sacrifice of 13 Wilmette citizens in “the Great World War.” The grove and plaque were dedicated on Armistice Day, 1921. The plaque features curved laurel branches in relief on either side. The inscription reads: “In appreciation of the supreme sacrifice made by these men in the Great War this grove of thirteen trees is reverently dedicated to their memory. Wilmette Post No. 46. American Legion November Eleventh 1921.” Then the 13 names are listed. (image).

Joliet Township Central High School Doughboy

ÒTHE DOUGHBOYÓ is a sculpture standing at the top of the stairs at the Herkimer Street entrance to the school. This familiar JT icon was presented to the school by Conrad M. Braun as a memorial to the 34 students and 6 faculty members who served in World War I. The statue entitled The World Soldier depicts a young doughboy in puttees.
