Real Estate and Building Industries Council

The Real Estate and Building Industries Council (RBIC) events attract and engage leaders of the design, construction, development, real estate, and finance industries in the activities of Landmarks Illinois. Since 1993, the RBIC has hosted an annual awards ceremony and reception at a recently redeveloped building or place and honors the project team for the success of its transformation. By recognizing individuals, firms, and organizations that demonstrate a special dedication to historic preservation through responsible development and planning, RBIC helps Landmarks Illinois promote the restoration and adaptive reuse and of historic structures and places.

ABOUT THE SALT SHED

The Salt Shed is an indoor and outdoor music venue located in Chicago’s West Town along the North Branch of the Chicago River. It opened in 2022 after a five-year renovation by 16 on Center, Blue Star Properties, R2 and Sky Deck.

Designed in 1930 by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, the 4.24-acre complex was previously used by the Morton Salt Co. for the storage, packaging and distribution of rock salt until 2015. Featuring a truss-roofed West Shed Building that has long been one of the community’s most visible structures, the brick and steel-frame complex is considered an excellent example of utilitarian, early 20th-century industrial architecture. It also honors Chicago’s industrial history and was designated a Chicago Landmark in 2021.
