The first months of the Trump administration have resulted in seismic shifts, including the rapid deterioration of federal resources. Most recently, the President’s FY26 budget request proposes the reduction or elimination of a variety of programs and incentives that have a history of supporting historic preservation projects. In alignment with our organizational statement of March 20, Landmarks Illinois aims to provide information and solutions to help Illinois preservationists navigate these changes.
Landmarks Illinois has created an online form, “Use and Impact of Government Resources in Preservation Projects,” to collect public input on the federal, state, and local financial resources that have supported historic preservation projects in Illinois. We are seeking information both regarding successfully completed projects and projects that are still in progress. This information will help us to understand how the loss of important federal financial resources could affect or has already affected historic preservation projects across the state, as well as what state or local government resources already exist or are needed to help fill those gaps. We can then communicate these findings to our members, stakeholders, and elected officials, as well as use them to understand how we can best advocate for the partners and communities we support. We invite anyone who has drawn on government financial resources for an Illinois-based preservation project to fill out this form. Landmarks Illinois will continue to accept submissions on a rolling basis, though filling out this form as soon as possible will assist us with mobilizing a more rapid response. If you have any questions about this collection of data, please email advocacy@landmarks.org.
