Illinois Historic Preservation Tax Credit: 2019 Award for Advocacy

Statewide

The Illinois Historic Preservation Tax Credit Advocacy Effort is an outstanding nine-year effort to make historic tax credits available statewide to preservation projects throughout Illinois. As a result of the perseverance of AIA Illinois’ Mike Waldinger, his board and a significant number of volunteer lobbyists, Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation in July 2018 that expanded the existing River Edge Redevelopment Zone State Historic Tax Credit and created a new 25% statewide historic tax credit. This program now provides vital incentives to spark preservation projects, investment in Illinois communities and ensure economic growth across the state. In creating the Illinois Historic Preservation Tax Credit program, Illinois joins 35 states across the country that have a statewide preservation tax incentive. Landmarks Illinois’ Frank Butterfield remarked that, “Without AIA Illinois, this never would have happened.”
