Illinois State Capitol (West Wing)
Springfield
The West Wing of the State Capitol, located at 300 State House, is the second phase of a comprehensive renovation program for the most significant governmental building in the state. Within 50 years of completion of this Second Empire-style National Historic Landmark, built between 1868-1888, inappropriate changes were made.
The intent of this project was to restore the key historic public spaces throughout its four floors and basement. Simultaneous to the restoration was the complete upgrade of the building’s systems, including new energy efficient HVAC systems, life safety and accessibility upgrades and security improvements. Restored public spaces include the circulation spaces, corridors and Grand Stair. Non-original and later modifications were removed and the original configuration and architecture were revealed. The $51 million project was recently awarded LEED Gold certification. This project, which was mainly to rehabilitate the infrastructure of the building, has impact on all that enter the iconic structure.
