Award for Public Leadership

Menard County Board

Petersburg

Exterior parging and remedial patching material had to be carefully removed in the restoration of the Menard County Courthouse’s delicate red sandstone exterior. This was a difficult task that required the expertise of trained craftsmen to ensure the success of the project. The façade of the 1896 courthouse, located approximately 20 miles northeast of Springfield, called for a combination of manual and mechanized restoration methods. The Board tackled the project and committed the necessary funding to restore the courthouse to its original splendor. The jury was impressed by the Board’s “sympathetic approach to the maintenance of a public building” and commended their leadership role in spearheading this challenging restoration.
