Statewide Endangered

2013 Ten Most Endangered Historic Places

From community mausoleums to an elegant 1920s theater to a group of bascule bridges to a modest brick row house that was home to blues legend Muddy Waters---the 2013 “Ten Most” list includes a remarkable variety of structures.

The “Ten Most” list was announced by Landmarks Illinois at an April 30th press conference in Springfield. The event was attended by community representatives, property owners, and state legislators. The purpose of the list is to focus attention on sites threatened by deterioration, lack of maintenance, insufficient funds, or inappropriate development. By publicizing them we hope to bolster local advocacy efforts and build support towards each property’s eventual preservation.

Since the program’s inception in 1995, 52 sites have been saved, 40 have been demolished or substantially altered, 80 are still threatened, and 13 have a rehab pending/underway. For a detailed list of past sites, visit the “Ten Most” Archives.
