Landmarks Events

Historic Pub Crawl

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Landmarks Illinois, Chicago Architecture Foundation docents led three one-hour walking tours through the Loop exploring different issues surrounding historic preservation. Each “Preservation and Pubs” tour had a unique route and theme, and ended at a different historic bar where a special guest of Landmarks Illinois discussed the history and character of each location.

North Loop
Preservation and Pubs
June 17, 2011

The last tour of the series traveled around the north Loop and ended at City Hall haunt Cardozo’s Pub, 170 W. Washington. Special Landmarks Illinois guest, historian Terry Tatum, gave an informative talk about the surrounding buildings, which included the unusual 1916 “I Am” Temple building (photo: center) by architect Rudolph Schindler.

Printer’s Row
Preservation and Pubs
May 13, 2011

Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s Printing House Row Historic District, Kasey’s Tavern (701 S. Dearborn Ave.) was the final destination of the second Preservation & Pubs tour. Chicago historian Dennis McClendon gave a brief history of the evolution of South Dearborn Street from a “levee district” to a commercial printing area to a mixed-use residential district.

“Little Cheyenne”
Preservation and Pubs
April 29, 2011

City of Chicago cultural historian Tim Samuelson gave tour attendees a colorful glimpse of life in “Little Cheyenne”, once a rowdy corner of the Loop. From the 1930s-era Sky Ride Tap (105 W. Van Buren St.), named after an attraction at the 1933-34 Century of Progress exposition, to turn-of-the-century Ald. Michael “Hinky Dink” Kenna’s 24-hour saloon (428 S. Clark St.), Samuelson told long-forgotten tales of the area’s people and buildings.
