Strawbridge-Shepherd House
Springfield

The University of Illinois at Springfield in February agreed to lease this 162-year-old farmhouse—and its two acres—to a local preservation group.

The two-story structure, which is one of the oldest surviving frame houses in central Illinois, has been unoccupied for more than two decades. In 2005, the university requested bids to move, restore, or demolish the building, which it has owned since 1970.

The ten-year lease with the Iles House Foundation calls for the group to restore the building, which will be aided by a $5,000 stabilization grant from Landmarks Illinois’ Preservation Heritage Fund.
