St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church

275 E. 15th Street,
Chicago Heights

Built 1912

The Archdiocese of Chicago began demolition of this 94-year-old structure in March 2006, amid protests from the Chicago Heights Historic Preservation Advisory Committee. A city demolition permit had been issued without committee review, despite the building’s designation as a local landmark.

Last November, a city inspector had written the Archdiocese, citing several building code violations and requesting a “complete rehab or, regrettably, the demolition of this magnificent historical building.” No mention was made of the building’s landmark status and the requirement for permit review by the advisory committee. LPCI’s request to delay the demolition—and provide reuse assistance—was rejected by city officials.
