The recent $660 million renovation of this 81-year-old structure—which LPCI had strongly opposed—has resulted in its de-listing as a National Historic Landmark (NHL). Former U.S. Interior Secretary Gale Norton had signed the order removing the stadium from the ranks of historic properties earlier this year, following a recommendation by the National Park Service Advisory Board.

The news was made public only in late-April. “For national landmarks, we look more for restoration,” a NPS spokesman told the Chicago Tribune. “This one crossed the line in terms of too much renovation.” Of 80,000 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, fewer than 2,500 have NHL status.
