North/Clybourn Red Line
Station
Chicago
A $4 million “refurbishment project” funded by Apple
Inc. has altered the appearance of this 1943 Art Moderne-style,
street-level CTA subway station. The building’s original
brick-and-granite cladding has been replaced with new
bricks. The divided steel windows are now single pane,
and other original features have been lost, including
wood doors. The station is adjacent to a new Apple
retail store and the funding arrangement permits the
company to create advertising at the rehabbed station.
Landmarks Illinois had attempted to work with CTA to
revise the plan, but because the project was privately
funded, it was not subject to the federal 106 review
process for historic properties. The station house—the
only one of its kind in the state—had been determined
eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
