Lakeshore Athletic Club
Chicago

Latest News:

In December, 2007, 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly announced Lakeshore Athletic Club would be renovated and converted to luxury senior housing.  A purchase agreement is underway between Northwestern University and Northbrook based Integrated Development LLC.   Alderman Reilly stated that despite pressure from Northwestern and many real estate leaders, who felt renovation was not economically feasible, it became clear after months of work with the Streeterville community, advocacy groups and preservation experts that there was a preservation option.

Northwestern University agreed to an extension of the City of Chicago’s 90-day demolition delay in order to permit more time to develop alternatives to demolition. The delay period has been extended to December 13, 2007.

42nd Ward alderman Brendan Reilly has successfully secured a 60 day extension of a 90 day demolition hold that was due to expire July 16. The extension expires September 14. During this time, Landmarks Illinois and other advocacy groups, such as Preservation Chicago and Streeterville Organization of Active Residents (SOAR), will continue to promote the importance of city landmark designation for the building and to seek prospective developers who would be willing to renovate and re-use the building. Any parties interested in the building should contact Alderman Reilly.

The demolition application for Lakeshore Athletic Club was submitted to the city April 16, 2007. Lakeshore Athletic Club was one of Landmarks Illinois’ 2007 Ten Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois. The building’s posting in the city’s 90 day demolition hold list reads as follows:
