Quincy Schoolhouse

317 State Street, Quincy

Built 1898; 1914 addition

This three-story former schoolhouse, set upon a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, was located on a large corner lot across from the Quincy Civic Center. The building was originally constructed in 1898 with a 1914 addition totaling 24,000 sq. ft. Several interior classrooms were converted into offices or small retail boutiques while the

auditorium served as a function hall. The building featured an intact brick fireplace and original woodwork throughout. The former school was within the borders of a local enterprise zone, which would have entitled a new buyer to tax incentives for commercial and/or residential projects. When a new owner could not be secured, the building was demolished in May 2009.
