Hubbard-Brach House

Winnetka

Built 1854

In February 2001, the

Hubbard-Brach House in

Winnetka was torn down.

Built in 1854, the

Italianate-style residence

was the home of early

settler Gilbert Hubbard.

It was remodeled in the Colonial Revival style in 1924 for Edwin Brach, a partner in the famed Chicago candy company. The architect was Robert Seyfarth. The three-acre lakeside parcel the house sat on was purchased in 1990 for a reported $12 million by George Garrick.

In demolishing the 6,700-square-foot residence, Garrick cited the high cost of repairs. An offer to move the house to another location was rejected due to the owner's time constraints. It was not a designated local landmark. (Winnetka's landmarks ordinance requires owner consent.)
