Hayes-Healy
Gymnasium

Chicago (Cook County)

Built 1929

The Chicago Transit Authority demolished this Collegiate Gothic-style building in December 2005. The structure, which had been built in 1929 as a gym for the McCormick Theological Seminary, is owned by DePaul University. Because it was identified as a contributing structure in the Sheffield National Register

District, its proposed demolition — to provide right-of-way for expansion of the adjacent Fullerton “L” station — triggered a Section 106 federal review process.

Although LPCI testified against the demolition and listed the building as one of the “Ten Most Endangered Buildings in Illinois” in 2003, the Federal Transportation Agency and the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency subsequently approved the demolition plans.
