Fischer-Crane Mansion

With the
demolition of the red brick Queen Anne-style Fischer-Crane mansion in
February 2003, Elmhurst has lost another historic building. Last summer, a
unique Prairie-style residence in Elmhurst was demolished----for two new
nondescript speculative houses (see
Going Going Gone-Beggs house).
The impressive and still structurally sound
Fischer-Crane mansion was torn down---despite preservation efforts by
local residents---for a few more parking spaces for a nearby church. The 111-year old
structure was originally the home of early Elmhurst settler and Civil War
veteran Dr. Frederick J.T. Fischer.
Without a preservation ordinance to protect its historic structures, what
