Doctors Hospital

Chicago

A proposal to demolish the former Illinois Central Hospital—more recently known as Doctors Hospital—has galvanized preservationists and residents in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The building, which is located in the 5800-block of Stony Island Avenue, is on Landmarks Illinois’ 2007-08 “Chicagoland Watch List.” The property’s current owner, the University of Chicago, has proposed razing the 94-year-old Classical Revival-style building, in order to construct a 250-unit Marriott Hotel and a 130-unit Fairfield Inn. Last year, in concert with the Hyde Park Historical Society, Landmarks Illinois engaged the Denver architecture firm JG Johnson Architects with experience in hospitality design and historic preservation. At a meeting in November 2007, JG Johnson Architects presented two alternative plans that demonstrate how the hospital building can be reused for hotel and other uses. In July 2008, White Lodging responded in a letter claiming the plans didn’t meet their needs.

Below are renderings of the two reuse proposals.

A subsequent community meeting was held on August 5, 2008, to discuss the proposal. The following is an article from Hyde Park Herald which covered the meeting.
