Shiloh (St.
Clair County.)
Located in St. Clair County just outside of
Belleville, Shiloh is the home of the Engelmann Farm, one of the oldest,
intact farmsteads in Illinois. The 154-acre farm, established in 1835,
comprises woodland, cropland, two historic homes, and a family cemetery.
While the cemetery is owned by a family foundation, the farmstead is
under a sales contract to a housing developer. Local citizens from
Shiloh and Belleville met with city and county officials and the
developer to express their concerns and offer alternatives to
redevelopment of the property.
As a result, the county board is pursuing a preservation plan that would
bring the farmstead into county ownership as a county park. However,
funds need to be raised to acquire the property from the current
developer who is willing to sell the property. For more information,
