Quincy (Adams County)
Quincy, which has had a preservation ordinance since 1983, is
one of the few municipalities in Illinois focusing on identifying and
landmarking architecture of the “Recent Past.” In a city with buildings
dating as far back as the early 1800’s, the preservation community has
brought attention to the work of John Benya (1911-1989), whose
architectural practice was based in Quincy. Recently, two Benya-designed
homes from the 1950s were locally landmarked and an exhibition of his
career is on display at the
Gardner Museum of
Architecture and Design
in downtown Quincy.
Focusing on downtown preservation efforts,
Downtown Quincy, Inc., an Illinois Main Street organization,
with
Quincy Preserves, sponsors a façade
improvement program encouraging the removal of false store fronts and
renovation of historic facades. Downtown improvement efforts are
reflected in places such as the
Granite Bank Gallery
and Washington Perk – a successful adaptive
re-use project located in the former State Savings Loan and Trust Co.
building built between 1892-1906 and listed in the National Register of
Historic Places.
Friends of the Washington Theater
continue efforts to preserve the 1924 Mediterranean Revival style
Washington Theater a former vaudeville and movie theater overlooking
Washington Square.
