Golden (Adams County)

Located 30 miles northeast of Quincy with a population of 650, Golden is the home of one of the state’s most unique structures, the Prairie Mills Windmill.

The Golden Historical Society was formed in 1986 with the mission of restoring the Dutch smock windmill built in 1873. The organization, led by a 15-member board, acquired the mill, restored it, and today it is a major tourist destination in Adams County. Landmarks Illinois provided two Preservation Heritage Fund Grants toward the effort.  For a detailed explanation of the windmill operation and terms click here.

Now the organization has purchased a historic bank building with the intent to restore it as a public destination as well. In its 21 years of existence, it is estimated the historical society has invested over $1 million in Golden through these preservation projects.
