The Rookery,
Chicago
“One
of my favorite interiors is at The Rookery (209 S. LaSalle St.) in
Chicago ,” says Madeline Gelis, an interior designer and a member of the
Landmarks Illinois Board of Directors. “The first time I wandered into
this building, I was absolutely awestruck.
“The building has an imposing masculine exterior (designed by Burnham &
Root in 1885), composed of a red granite block base, pressed brick
walls, and terra cotta ornament. Yet its interior is amazingly feminine
in character. A beautiful Art Deco-style elevator lobby with warm gold
tones (William Drummond; 1931) leads you into the stunning glass-covered
light court that was renovated by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1907. There, a
seamless blend of white marble and Persian-style ornamental detailing is
combined with curving staircases and classic Wright-style light
fixtures.

“I would guess there are a lot of people who work within blocks of this
building that have never ventured inside. They are missing one of the
city’s great interior spaces,” Madeline concludes.”
