Atlanta, Logan County
Downey Building

A Mesker ironwork storefront distinguishes the two-story 1867 Downey Building along Old Rt. 66, Atlanta’s main street.  The Atlanta Public Library and Museum used a $10,000 grant in 2006 to help fund Phase II of the restoration. Atlanta is 10 miles northwest of Lincoln in Logan County.

Carrollton, Greene County
Greene County Almshouse

The 1870 brick Italianate is one of only a few surviving buildings in Illinois constructed by county governments to house and care for the poor and indigent.  Abandoned in the 1950s, it has fallen into an advanced state of disrepair. The Greene County Economic Development Committee, Inc. was awarded a $5,000 grant in 2006 to stabilize the building.  The building was one of Landmarks Illinois' Ten Most Endangered Historic Places in 2006. Carrollton is 45 miles north of St. Louis.

Decatur, Macon County
Millikin Homestead

Located on the campus of Millikin University, this homestead features an 1875 Victorian mansion. The university used a $2,500 grant in 2007 to repair and repaint the building’s third-floor dormers and eaves. After being altered for use as a hospital and later as an art museum, the University returned the property to its original grandeur in the 1970s.

Eldred, Greene County
Eldred House

The Illinois Valley Cultural Heritage Association (IVCHA) used a $13,000 grant in 2006 to make repairs to the roof of this 1861 stone Greek Revival-style farmhouse. IVCHA hopes to restore the complex as an interpretive center for the lower Illinois River valley. It was listed on Landmarks Illinois' Ten Most Endangered Historic Places in 2004. Eldred is 45 miles north of St. Louis in Greene County.

Elkhart, Logan County
Gillette Memorial Arch

This single-arch cast concrete bridge was built in 1915 to connect two sections of private property over a county road. A $3,750 matching grant in 2006 paid for needed repairs to the arch.  This property was listed as one of Landmarks Illinois' Ten Most Endangered Historic Places in 2005. Elkhart is located 20 miles northeast of Springfield in Logan County.

Greene County
Porthole Barns

A $1000 grant in 2009 was used by the Illinois Valley Cultural Heritage Association and the Greene County Economic Development Group to host a timber framer to demonstrate to property owners the basics of barn construction and general repair. The county’s collection of 30 “Porthole Barns” was listed on Landmarks Illinois’ 2009 Ten Most Endangered List. Greene County is 40 miles north of St. Louis.

Jacksonville, Morgan County
Governor Duncan Mansion

A $10,000 matching grant was awarded in 2006 to the Rev. James Caldwell Chapter DAR, which has owned the property since 1920, for restoration work.  The home was constructed in 1833-34 for Joseph Duncan, who was not only Illinois Governor but also a U.S. Senator. The property is located in the Jacksonville Historic District and is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jacksonville is 35 miles west of Springfield in Morgan County.

Jacksonville, Morgan County
Jefferson School

Built in 1928, Jefferson School was the city’s oldest operating school at the time of its closing in 2002.  The original building, designed by Hewitt, Emerson, and Gregg architects of Peoria, remains unchanged, with a 1950s addition to the south.  The interior features seven sculptural reliefs, along with original oak doors and handrails.  The current owners, The Boys and Girls Club, received a $1,000 grant in 2009 to repair the roof.

Springfield, Sangamon County
Margery Adams House

The Illinois Audubon Society used a $10,000 grant in 2006 to renovate this 1850s house, which is located in the Adams Wildlife Sanctuary.  A later addition at the rear was removed and an addition constructed for new offices.

Springfield, Sangamon County
Strawbridge House

The University of Illinois at Springfield, which has owned this 162-year-old farmhouse since 1970, leased the house and its two acres to a local preservation group in February 2007. The two-story structure, which is one of the oldest surviving frame houses in central Illinois, had been unoccupied for more than two decades. The ten-year lease with the Iles House Foundation calls for the group to restore the building, which will be aided by a $5,000 stabilization grant in 2007.
