Old Masonic Temple

220 North Sheridan Road, Waukegan
(E.E. Roberts, 1920-21)

Currently for sale at an asking price of $1.95 million, the former Masonic Temple has been empty since the Masons vacated the building in 1982. The current owner acquired the building in 1988 and has been unsuccessful in renovating the property. Located on the west side of Sheridan Road atop a bluff that overlooks Waukegan's lakefront and a city park, the City would like the building to be acquired

by someone who will appropriately rehabilitate and re-use the building. Its architectural significance and prominent site makes it a high priority adaptive re-use project for the city. Meanwhile, it continues to deteriorate as it awaits a new owner.

Architect E.E. Roberts is well known for his many residential commissions, of varying architectural styles, while his early practice was based in Oak Park. Commercial and public commissions for Roberts were becoming more common during the period of the Masonic Temple’s construction.
