Harmening Homestead
26W258 Lake Street, Hanover Park
(unincorporated DuPage Co.)
(c.1871-73)
With rampant development
surrounding it, the Harmening Homestead, which includes a circa 1870 house
and barn, has stood frozen in time under the same family ownership since
1939. The 20 acres of grounds are leased to a sod farm, but the house has
been unoccupied since the 1950s and maintained only for curb appeal. |

Hanover Park officials are
waiting for the family to sell the house and are in general agreement that
the property would be annexed when a redevelopment plan is proposed. The
property falls within the city’s “plan area” for commercial/ business park
development. A new owner would have to plan a commercial reuse for the
buildings. However, Hanover Park does not have a local preservation
ordinance and there are currently no protections in place for the property.
Built by German immigrant Henry
Harmening, the Hanover Park community for generations has heard the story
that Harmening could see the Great Chicago Fire from his home and traveled
down Irving Park Road to the city to lend assistance to friends and family.
