Recycled Paper Greetings Buildings
3636-38 N. Broadway, Chicago
(1927, c.1910)

The Recycled Paper Greetings Buildings are currently for sale and vulnerable to replacement with residential development which is commonplace in the Lakeview neighborhood. While some interest exists from developers in rehabbing the buildings, the prominent commercial block is vulnerable to demolition without Chicago landmark designation. 3638 N. Broadway is coded orange in the city’s Historic Resource Survey, which would trigger a 90-day demolition hold. However, 3636 N. Broadway was inexplicably not identified in the survey and therefore could be easily demolished.

3638 N. Broadway, a Neo-classical building directly to the north and adjacent to 3636, was built by Wieland Dairy in 1909. Wieland built 3636 N. Broadway in 1927-28. Shortly thereafter, Wieland Dairy, including the two buildings, was purchased by Borden Dairy. Both buildings were later purchased from Borden by Curtiss Candy Company as its new headquarters in 1957. Curtiss is the company which founded the Baby Ruth and Butterfinger candy bars. Recycled Paper Greetings purchased the property in 1981.
