Raber House

5760 S. Lafayette, Chicago
(Thomas W. Wing, 1870,
cupola 1894)

This Italianate-style structure is one of the city’s few remaining pre-Fire of 1871 residences. It was built for John Raber, an early real estate developer and politician. The original six-acre estate originally stretched to State Street—one block to the east. The brick residence has been vacant for more than a decade. It is currently owned by the City of Chicago, which has kept the building boarded and secure. However, the city has been unsuccessful in attracting an owner interested in rehabilitating the building and the building has continued to badly deteriorate. Although the building has been a designated Chicago Landmark since 1996, its location in a depressed area of the Englewood community has discouraged potential new uses.
