Westinghouse
High School
3301 W.
Franklin Blvd.,
Chicago
The building’s distinctive five-story tower and main entrance are
embellished by carved eagles and Prairie-style detailing. It was designed in
1919 for the Bunte Brothers Candy Factory by Schmidt, Garden & Martin, a
firm known for its influential designs, including the Montgomery Ward
Warehouse.

This sprawling complex – one of the largest Chicago School-style designs ever
built – is scheduled to be demolished following completion of a new high
school facility. Much of the historic building’s current footprint will be
replaced by athletic fields and parking lots. This is the third time the
structure has been listed on LPCI’s “Chicagoland Watch List.”
|
What Can I Do? Write the Chicago Board of Education, urging its design
consultants to reconfigure the site plans for new surface parking lots and
athletic fields, which would result in the unnecessary demolition of the
significant front portion of this highly distinctive structure. (Michael W.
Scott, President, Board of Education, 125 S. Clark, Chicago, IL 60613;
e-mail: mscott@cps.k12.il.us.) Community residents should contact the local
alderman, Ed Smith (28th Ward), 118 N. Pulaski Road, Chicago, IL 60624,
noting that a new high school and the retention of the front portion of this
structure are not mutually exclusive goals.
