Cermak Road Bridge District
Cermak Road, predominantly between Grove and Jefferson,

Chicago

This collection of buildings, along with the city’s last double-leaf Scherzer rolling lift bridge, is one of the Chicago’s best examples of early-20th century riverfront industrial development.

Although many of the area’s other industrial buildings have been destroyed, this group of structures includes: Cermak Bridge (William Scherzer, 1906), Hoyt Building (Nimmons & Fellows, 1909), Thomson and Taylor Spice Building (Chatten & Hammond, 1911), Wendnagel & Co. Warehouse (1901), and Western Shade Cloth Building (Lockwood Green & Co., 1924).

This district has been proposed as a Chicago Landmark by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, but the matter is pending approval and the city’s Department of Planning and Development has voiced its opposition.

What Can I Do?  Please write the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, urging them to recommend landmark designation for this proposed district. (The Commission’s address is 33 N. LaSalle, Room 1600, Chicago, IL 60602.)  Please send a copy of your letter to the local alderman, Daniel Solis (25th Ward), 2439 S. Oakley, Chicago, IL 60608—along with a note urging him to designate all of the buildings in this district at the City Council.
