River Forest
Women’s Club

526 Ashland Ave.,
River Forest

This unique Prairie School building was designed in 1913 by architect William Drummond, a former chief draftsman for Frank Lloyd Wright. The green-stained, board-and-batten clad structure consists of an acoustically perfect small auditorium, a large basement meeting hall, and a kitchen. Unfortunately, the women’s club that has owned the building for 91 years

has concluded it can no longer maintain the structure. It has proposed turning it over to the local park district, which has been using the space for various activities. Although located in a National Register District, the building has no local landmark protection and there are fears that if the building is not permanently protected, its large lot could make it vulnerable to a future residential teardown scenario.
