Kendall College Block
Bounded by
Orrington Ave., Colfax St., Sherman Ave. and Lincoln St.,
Evanston
The five historic structures on this block will soon be vacated by Kendall
College, which has relocated to Chicago. A developer has proposed a new
residential project on the site, which calls for demolition of the existing
buildings. This block includes several early-20th century residences and
Wesley Hall, the school’s former administration building, which was built in |

1907 for the former Swedish Methodist Episcopal Theological Seminary.
Although these structures are included in the Northeast Evanston Historic
District—a local landmark—their protection is not assured. An exclusion last
year of eight buildings from the district, as part of an out-of-court legal
settlement with Northwestern University, has set a dangerous precedent. The
developer of this site is seeking a similar action by the city to
accommodate its proposed development.
