Parlor, Col. Benjamin Stephenson House, Edwardsville
“My
favorite interior is the parlor of the 1820 Federal-style Col. Benjamin
Stephenson House in Edwardsville,” says Joseph A. Weber, an emeritus
professor of art education at Southern Illinois University and a member
of the Edwardsville Historic Preservation Commission. “It is a very
beautiful, example of a refined and perfectly proportioned room with
exquisite details, not generally found in early Illinois interiors."
“The symmetrical placement of the 12-over-8 windows and the neoclassical
mantel in this square room is beautiful. The room’s 10-foot-tall
ceilings and case work create a sense of balance and visual harmony
which appeals to me."

“The room is furnished with antiques and reproductions of the period,
reflecting a home and life style of an upper-class family who moved to
the Illinois Territory in the early 1800s from Kentucky.”
