Adaptive Use
The Buckingham Building
Chicago

Completed in 1930 and named for the neighboring fountain, the Buckingham is a 27-story Art Deco building designed by Holabird & Root. Vacated in 2002, the building had been neglected by its owner. During the winter of 2004, when the heat but not the water had been shut off, major flooding occurred. The building suffered further from vandalism and theft of significant interior features. Brownstone Realty and Development Company and L&H Real Estate Group partnered to purchase the building in 2004 and began a full renovation in 2006. The exterior of the building was restored and the indoor spaces adapted for apartments, lounges, and retail uses – preserving the main lobby, historic hallways, and several other interior spaces. The Buckingham is now entirely leased and occupied by Columbia College for student residences.
