This frame Queen Anne residence was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1892,
while he was employed by the architectural firm of Adler & Sullivan. Over
the years, numerous alterations had obscured the original floor plan and
architectural details. After poring over historic photographs, the current
owners deciphered the building’s 1895 appearance and embarked on a complete
restoration. The interior work included historic paint analysis, fabrication
of period hardware pieces, installation of carbon filament lighting
fixtures, and replication of missing interior woodwork throughout. The
exterior clapboards, which had been painted over the years, were stripped to
their original finish and porch details were redesigned in keeping with the
style of the house.
Thanks to the owners’ dedication to Wright’s original design intent, and
their patience throughout the exacting six-year process, one of Wright’s
lesser known pre-Prairie commissions has been saved.
